Li Ka Shing Program in Gender and Science
In 2007 the Chau Noi Shuen Foundation generously contributed $500,000 to the Li Ka Shing Foundation Fund for Gender and Women's Studies, which was created to support activities organized by the Department of Gender and Women's Studies and its affiliated unit, the Beatrice Bain Research Group (BBRG) at the University of California, Berkeley. The Li Ka Shing Program in Gender and Science was created to pursue certain of the fund's objectives, namely:
- Support conferences, public lectures, and workshops advancing research on gender and science (see below and event calendar and event archive)
- Share resources among and information about other programs on women in science and engineering nationally and internationally (see research and resources page)
- Support collaborative research between scholars from UC Berkeley and from China and elsewhere on gender in science (see visiting scholars and research and resources pages).
The program in gender and science aims to further understanding of and ameliorate conditions that perpetuate the underrepresentation of women in scientific and engineering disciplines. It also supports and promotes scholarship that explores any of the diverse links between gender and science. This includes the ways in which different scientific disciplines have at different times and in different parts of the world tried to explain gender itself, and the social, economic, and personal costs of so doing.
