Stipends

Students admitted to the DEWGS Program can apply for stipends to support research and activities related to their participation in the program. The total budget for graduate student stipends varies each year. Each award can be up to $500. This will be given out in two batches; roughly $2500 in the Fall, and the same in the Spring. Each award can be up to $500. If smaller awards are made, more awards will be given out until the total is allocated.

Purpose of the Stipends: The stipends are intended to provide a source of funding for students in the DEWGS to engage in DEWGS-related activities or to pursue DEWGS scholarship. As such, it is for projects that are outside of the normal range of your home department activities. Examples would be: travel to conferences or workshops that focus on gender or sexuality; purchase of equipment or books that aid DEWGS scholarship; travel to an archive or field work site for the purpose of engaging in gender or sexuality-related scholarship.

Deadline to Apply: Fall deadline: September 30; Spring deadline: February 28

Application Procedure: Submit a letter to Director, DEWGS, Gender & Women's Studies Department, University of California at Berkeley, 608 Barrows Hall, Berkeley, CA 94729-1070. You do NOT need letters of recommendation. The letter should indicate the exact nature of your project and the amount it is likely to cost (give dollar amounts where possible, including for airfares or hotel rooms). You should also explain why this project would enhance your scholarship at this point in your graduate career. Finally, you must justify applying for DEWGS funds - why could this project not be funded by your home department or the Graduate Division?

Evaluation Criteria: The Executive Committee of the DEWGS will meet shortly after each deadline to decide which applications to fund. Previous history of DEWGS funding will be considered in determining allocations, and students who have never received funding will be given the highest priority. Evaluation will be based on the following considerations: 1) Does the student have a well defined use for the stipend, and has the student documented the costs involved? 2) Is the project clearly a DEWGS related project which would not be likely to be funded elsewhere? 3) Would the activity involved contribute to the student's intellectual growth and / or professionalization in DEWGS scholarship?

Receiving Your Award: You will be notified by email immediately after the committee has met as to whether you received a stipend or not. In the event that your application was successful, you will be given instructions on how to receive your stipend. If your application was not successful, your message will contain an indication of why it did not succeed.
